Her Heartfelt Designs Are Comfy and Cozy
Known for her boundless energy, infectious sense of fun, and commitment to the comfort-inspired lifestyle — as well as to her “all-day” pajamas — designer Karen Neuburger reminds us just how powerful and comforting women’s friendships can be.
This spring, Karen’s lifestyle brand got together with Quilting Treasures to introduce a new premium fabric collection called “Our Part for the Heart.” Quilting Treasures will donate a portion of sales from the line to WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease. As 
with her previous campaign to raise money for breast cancer research, Karen is again helping to get funding to research scientists. “Every woman thinks about her heart health,” Karen says, “and we’ve learned that women are very different from men” in the way they respond to different treatments.
“If I weren’t in my office I’d be out volunteering,” she adds. “That’s the way I was brought up.” Her Heart collection combines warm earth tones with heart-inspired reds, pinks and blues in eight designs available in 24 colors. The new designs are charming and have a heirloom quality, suggesting lace, calico, ombre, toile, and include plenty of coordinating prints.
“There’s lots of red,” Karen explains, “red for your heart.” She put her heart into these fabrics: “It’s all about comfort and comforting the people in your life.”
Comfort and Joy
Women’s comfort goes hand in hand with women’s wellness, and the new collection, as well as Karen’s other heart-themed products, encourages women to slow down, relax with family and friends, and do their part to prevent disease through healthy lifestyle choices. “I believe wellness can be sewn into a quilt,” she says. Karen’s own lifelong quest for comfort led her to shed the corporate dress of the fashion industry, shred her pantyhose, toss her pumps, and create her now-famous lifestyle brand. Memories of her down-to-earth childhood in northern Minnesota, of seeing “women stretched over our dining room table and seeing how much of their hearts went into the quilt,” have never faded. She remembers watching her beloved navy blue velvet dress being sewn into a quilt, as well as her grandmother’s tweed coat.

Though her quilting fabrics are a great success, Karen has built her business to include comfort all over the house. She introduced her first pair of “all-day” pajamas in 1994 (Oprah’s faves are the soft “boyfriend” pajamas), and her brand has grown to make her the purveyor of all things comfy and cozy. Her comfort products include bedding, luxury mattresses, infant bedding and accessories, lounge socks, intimates, home décor and tabletop accessories, crafts, and sleepwear for the entire family.
Karen and her husband, Richard, live in scenic Marin County, California, in their “modern country” home. “I picked this area because it reminded me of Minnesota,” she says. (Except for the winters.) She loves raising roses in the California sunshine and has two grown daughters and two grandchildren.
