QUILT #116 – Oct/Nov 2010
The Palette of Autumn
Dear Quilting Friends,
What is it about fall that makes it so delightful? Is it the welcome relief of cooler breezes after a hot summer? Or the contrast in nature when bright blooms and green trees yield to hued mums and intense leaves? Having lived in the north, where summer was too short, and in the south, where it’s too long, I’ve always greeted autumn as my favorite time of year! If you feel the same, you’ll love this fall issue. It is packed with quilted projects that reflect a season of change, joy of family and friends, and even some favorite recipes.
The gathering of harvest-inspired designs was certainly on my mind when I planned this issue. There’s a bright batik maple leaf quilt called Collecting Leaves and a softly muted oak leaf design, Autumn Wreath. They are both gorgeous! There’s even a colorful set of foliage placemats and pumpkins done in two ways: a fun appliqué quilt and a simple table runner.
I love coziness, whether it’s tucked into a quilt by the fire or friends sharing a pot of stew! Enjoy the stories and symbols found in this issue that have inspired the projects and articles. There’s a girlfriend quilt from Marie Osmond’s latest fabric line, a welcoming Victorian wall hanging, and a yellow rose quilt, the sign of friendship! Take a sneak peek at Eleanor Burns’ new book, “Quilt Blocks on American Barns.” Did you know that there are more than 1,000 barns across the country with painted blocks? Read about Kaffe Fassett’s love of stripes. He sees them everywhere, from rows of tulip fields in Holland to French linens; no wonder he places them in his quilts and fabrics!
Here’s hoping a walk through these pages will stir thoughts towards a cozy autumn and that you’ll soon be stitching several new projects. I’m excited about this season of change, warmth and creativity. Hope you are too!
Happy Sewing!
