Weekend Away

This weekend will find me in Williamsburg, VA teaching beginning appliqué to members  of the Virginia Consortium of Quilters.  My personal bags are packed and will be the first to be loaded into my car.  No more out of town trips without pj’s and toothpaste!  Following, I will load the “goodie” bags for my students and a plate of homemade chocolate chip cookies.  I am a firm believer in sharing with others so my fellow quilters will each go home with a surprise from my stash.  Every half-hour we will have cookie break time, after all, that’s what quilting is all about, right?

Teaching is my favorite aspect of quilting.  It is so important to share our knowledge, ideas and talents with other quilters.  I love encouraging my students to add their own personal touch to a pattern and not do exactly what I have done.   We all have our own individual tastes and our quilts need to reflect those. Sometimes we need to stretch our imaginations and try something new, we may be surprised at what hidden talents we have.

Not only do I like just the teaching part of quilting but also the socialization.  When a group of women get together they can “let their hair down” and share their joys, frustrations, and sorrows with others.  It is fun to relate stories of our families, especially the “grands”, act a bit goofy like we did “back in the days” and just relax and get some new projects started or old ones finished.

As much as I would love to sit here and continue chatting with you time is running short and I need to pack up the sewing machine.  I have to make sure no cords or supplies get left behind this trip!!

Enjoy your weekend and take a few minutes to get one of those unfinished projects completed!

About the Author: Karen DuMont

When people ask what I do I tell them, “I dough, sew and hoe”. I have been a dough artist for 36 years, an avid quilter and a weekend gardener. I started quilting in 1997 several years after moving to Richmond, VA from St. Louis, Mo. I took a few quilting classes to meet people and became hooked. What started as a pastime to my doughart has now turned into a fulltime job. Please visit my websites, www.kariepatch.com , and www.adoughables to see how I have turned two hobbies into profitable businesses.

Your blog hit upon what most quilters love, the socialization part of the craft. We can be friends with people that may not have anything else in common with us, except quilting. We can grow and learn something different (using different colors, 30′s line, instead of the lastest fabric line, or challenging one another to use patterns “out of our box”).The social part of quilting is great and keeps our minds open for exploring the unexplored! Love your patterns Karen!

Seeing your pillows displayed in the photo inspired me to make another one. I made several Christmas tree pillows as gifts last year. The recipients loved them and it was fun to tell them if was one of your designs. :-) Keep on creating!
