Sunny Day Becomes Baby Sweet

We always love it when readers email us with photos of quilts they’ve made from the magazine—it’s neat to see someone else’s fabric choices or vision of a particular project.

Last week I received an email from someone I know, which only added to the fun! I thought I’d share her story with you.

Liz Baird wanted to make a quilt for her first grandbaby, Will, born mid-May. She had started out making quilts for babies born to her nieces and nephews, but when her daughter was pregnant, she wanted to branch out. ”I usually had a set pattern to most of my quilts, but I felt this baby deserved a little something different and special,” she says.

While fabric hunting with her daughter Clarissa and Barb, the baby’s other grandma, Liz started paging through Simple Quilts & Sewing. ”I fell in love with the ‘Sunny Day’ quilt immediately,” she remembers.  The three women spent the next couple hours choosing fabric to coordinate with Clarissa’s blue, green, tan and chocolate nursery color scheme.

Liz sketched the pattern out on paper to reduce the Sunny Day pattern from bed size to a more manageable baby quilt. ”I did this by deciding how big I wanted the finished quilt to be. Then I decided how wide the two borders would be and ‘backed into’ the block size. The finished blocks turned out to be 5-1/2”.  Liz’s husband even got into the fun—she wasn’t sure how to size the corner and setting triangles, but ”fortunately, my husband does a lot of tile work on the diagonal and he was able to determine the proper size of the side triangles for me!!  My saving grace!!”

The result? One adorable newborn, content to relax on a quilt his grandma stitched for him. And Liz says, ”The best thing is that Clarissa and Frank really like it and I hope Will plays on it until it’s worn out. That would be the best compliment I could ever receive!!”

Have you made a project from Quilt or Simple Quilts & Sewing? We’d love to see it!
