Snow…a four letter word

Snow.  Winter wonderland.  So last summer, when sweat was dripping off the end of my nose and making large wet rings on my quilt as I was busy binding, I did think of those words with longing, almost the same longing as the words “dark chocolate” and “ice cream” elicit.  But now – now, the word “snow” is a four letter word.  Winter wonderland – I just wonder when it is going to end!

And I can tell you that turning on the oven and opening the back door has little to no impact on the level of snow in the yard.  Just a helpful hint from me to you.  It does significantly increase your gas bill – and cools the house off.  But the snow will still be there.  Sorry.  I don’t know about you, but this southern magnolia is feeling the freeze and is beyond ready for some warmer weather.  So what’s girl to do?

Well, despite the fact that I’m risking decreasing the insulation factor that my stash provides, I’ve been diving into the piles of fabric, and coming out with bright, WARM colors, prints redolent of summer sun and surf, and stitching away, ever hopeful that the combination of thoughts of toes in the sand, sun warming my back, and the images of flowers, birds, grass (when’s the last time you saw that?) and blue skies (but no snowflakes, thank you very much) will have an impact on the jet stream and cause it to shift – left, right, up, down, don’t really care as long as the shift brings warm air and clear skies.

Spring is just around the corner according to the calendar.  But in the meantime, I’ll create a bit of springtime in my sewing room – that’s my wonderland.  And I’m filling it – and the design wall – with reds and yellows and oranges, a fabric bouquet impervious to frost, ice, snow.  Until the real thing gets here.

Happy almost spring!

About the Author: Tammy Silvers

I have been quilting since my dear sister-in-law drug me kicking and screaming into a quilt shop to take a class with her 18 years ago. Even though my first quilt was gag-a-rific, I caught the quilting bug and have been quilting away ever since. My best friend and business partner, Julia LaBauve (Outside the Lines Designs) and her "what if we....?" questions continue to spark many a design fire in me.
