Show and Tell

When you finish (or even just make progress) on a quilt, is your first inclination to show it off? I readily admit mine is, so I just have to share the crib quilt I’ve made for my soon-to-be-arriving baby. It’s using Maywood’s Backporch Bouquet collection by Bate & Taylor. I scanned the animal shapes from wrapping paper and enlarged them to the right size, and made some simple blocks to alternate with the appliqués. I have to admit that I’m not a huge of fan of appliqué. Don’t get me wrong—I love appliqué projects; I just don’t like doing the work. Give me straight lines to cut and sew any day!

My mom was in town visiting, helping by painting the baby room, and she did the cutting and ironing while I sewed. It’s truly amazing how quickly a quilt goes together when there are four hands working on it instead of two! Mom is also sewing the bumpers and curtains for me (there’s a reason that sewing skills are genetic…so you can share the workload!). After I finish assembling the quilt, I’m starting in on these cute stuffed animals. I’ve got five weeks and counting…I’d better get sewing!

About the Author: Lisa Swenson Ruble

I made my first quilt when I graduated from college and realized that I needed a hobby to fill all those hours that used to be dedicated to homework! Eleven years later, I'm completely addicted to quilting and thrilled that my day job as the managing editor for Quilt, Simple Quilts & Sewing and Quilt Almanac allows me to "play" with quilts and the friendly world of quilters!

Hi Lisa, I love the way you used stripes in your sashing. I wish the picture of the quilt was larger! My sister just sent me a large stack of hand embroider animals & objects for baby quilts including alot of redwork squares, and your quilt has given me some good ideas. Thank you!

I made my first baby quilt in 1968, and I’ve been quilting for 41 years (That’s alot of quilts!) and I still love quick quilts. Patty
