Quilt-in-a-Weekend

Thirty-three showed up at Farmville, Virginia’s very first Quilt-in-a-Weekend!  I have been holding this free event in the communities I have lived in for the last 18 years.  So after I moved to Virginia in January, I couldn’t wait to meet some of the local women and hold a Quilt-in-a-Weekend in my new little town.

With some help from experienced quilters, I think we all had a great time of making new friends as well as introducing many first time quilters to the art of quilting!  After getting over the fear of the rotary cutter and learning how to wind a bobbin, the newbies seemed to have had a wonderfulexperience.  They made a Friendship Pinwheel Quilt (or at least got a good start with instructions on how to finish.)  We had a delicious lunch together and I made my Cinnamon Turkey Chili that was  written about in the Oct/Nov issue of QUILT.

We also had several speakers throughout the weekend, sharing quilt skills and lessons to encourage the women in their sewing and life in general.  One woman showed her mother’s last quilt. Her mom no longer quilts since she has Alzheimers. It was sad, but also a reminder of how precious a quilt can be when made by a loved one. What I enjoy about the weekend is the range in ages…little ones up to an 87-year-old great grandmother!

I called two of the quilters a week after the weekend and was thrilled to hear they had finished their quilts and were using them.  Way to go!  I’m so proud of each of you.  Here’s some photos from the weekend and a picture of the featured quilt project.

About the Author: Deb Hearn

QUILT Editor-in-Chief I have enjoyed quilting for over 25 years, ever since the day I stopped by a friend's house and saw a quilt on every bed! I was so inspired, that I went home and started a Grandmother's Fan for our daughter. As soon as the quilt was finished, our three sons were waiting in line for a quilt of their own! My latest adventure in the quilting world is my position as Editor-in-Chief of QUILT Magazine, a job that is more like play than work ...with inspiring quilts and friendly conversations with quilters almost every day!

I love perusing your site for inspiration. I need to finish a few projects I have started. We now call them “PHD’s.” It sounds impressive when friends ask you what you’re working on…”Projects Half Done.” Thank you for all you do!
