Oh the weather outside is frightful…

But the fire is so delightful… that’s right, most of the country is getting hit by a bitter cold spell. Which means it’s a perfect opportunity to start a new project! I have Monday off as well, so I’m planning to spend as much of the weekend quilting as possible (and if I don’t leave the house…oh well!). I do have a bit of a ticking clock; I need to finish the quilt for my baby’s room before his/her arrival in about six weeks. Even if I didn’t have that deadline hanging over my head, I’d still spend a chunk of the weekend quilting. With the holidays over, it’s wonderful to have some free time at home to do as I please.

What kind of project do you work on during the winter months? Something flannel and cozy as befits the weather outside? Or are you looking ahead to spring and picking out bright colors and floral blocks? Or like me, perhaps you’re working on a baby quilt with a finite deadline.

Maybe you’re one of those people I really admire—the ones who shop the couple days after Christmas and buy holiday wrapping paper 50% off. I’m convinced the person who does that—the person who can stomach Christmas décor so soon after the (seems like) 2-month holiday season ends—is the same person that sews stockings, tree skirts, and Christmas quilts in January. Hey, it’s a great idea, because let’s face it—no one has time to do those projects in November or December—but I just can’t make myself do it.

In the spirit of the new year, I’m going to make a list of all of my unfinished (or planned and not yet started) projects. Much like having an exercise buddy to guilt me into daily action, I feel like sharing my list with the quilting world (or at least those of you who read our blogs) will spur me into action. Plus, the baby will take plenty of naps, leaving me lots of time to quilt, right?!

Here’s my list. Feel free to share yours in return and we’ll support each other in a year of productivity!

*Crib quilt for baby Ruble (fabric arrived this week, so hopefully I can post some pictures in next week’s blog.

*Corduroy batik lap quilt (40 blocks complete; 24 to go)

*Block of the Month New York Beauty quilt (this very involved project could be a lifelong pursuit!)

*Woolfelt appliqué pillows for our couch

*Kaffe Fassett fabric bed quilt (need to assemble quilt top)

*Christmas tree skirt (this has been on my list for four years)

*Christmas stocking for new baby and my sister-in-law’s new baby (I won’t start these until probably October!)

*Batik quilt for our guest bedroom

*Landscape quilt of a rock climber for my husband (I drew this for him in art class almost ten years ago, and he asked me to recreate it in fabric)

About the Author: Lisa Swenson Ruble

I made my first quilt when I graduated from college and realized that I needed a hobby to fill all those hours that used to be dedicated to homework! Eleven years later, I'm completely addicted to quilting and thrilled that my day job as the managing editor for Quilt, Simple Quilts & Sewing and Quilt Almanac allows me to "play" with quilts and the friendly world of quilters!
