Making Memories with a Quilt

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving gathering this year with all four of our children and their spouses  …and our five sweet grandbabies.  What a feeling of contentment to look around the Thanksgiving table and to count my blessings!

Now that the holiday is over, the house is once again quiet and Christmas is fast approaching!  I once heard of a story about a Christmas Memory Quilt.  Maybe you might be interested in doing this with your family and a group of close friends.  Starting with the new year, make a large bed size quilt in Christmas prints from your stash.  Be sure to back it with a muslin backing.  Make a list of names and addresses of those you love. Depending on the size of your circle of friends and family, start around the beginning of December and mail or hand off the quilt with a fabric pen and instructions to the first one on the list. Ask them to sleep under it and the next morning record their thoughts or a special message on the quilt back along with their name and the date and then pass it on to the next person on the list. The process continues until close to Christmas Eve, when it is returned to you, the quilt maker, to sleep under it.  Each year the quilt can circulate again with new messages and memories added with a fun review of the past years.

So with the Christmas season quickly approaching maybe this might be a good New Year’s resolution to make a memory quilt. Or, if you have the perfect quilt already made to circulate, why not start a Christmas tradition now!

Enjoy the Season with family and friends ~

About the Author: Deb Hearn

QUILT Editor-in-Chief I have enjoyed quilting for over 25 years, ever since the day I stopped by a friend's house and saw a quilt on every bed! I was so inspired, that I went home and started a Grandmother's Fan for our daughter. As soon as the quilt was finished, our three sons were waiting in line for a quilt of their own! My latest adventure in the quilting world is my position as Editor-in-Chief of QUILT Magazine, a job that is more like play than work ...with inspiring quilts and friendly conversations with quilters almost every day!

I love the idea of a memory quilt! I plan on making a Log Cabin quilt this holiday season and might try to incorporate a few of the memory ideas you mentioned into my quilt. Thanks Debbie!
