Congratulations to a New Quilter!

I’m proud to say that my mother-in-law, Alice Ruble has joined the ranks of the quilting world. She begs to differ, saying that one quilt does not a quilter make, but as far as I’m concerned, anyone who has made a quilt is officially a quilter.

As Alice has followed the quilting magazines I’ve worked for over the last five years, she’d often say, ”I should try that…”

This summer, she did. After seeing the project below in the spring 2009 issue of Quick Quilts, and with two newborn grandbabies in mind, she jumped in.

I supplied her with fabric—even cutting it for her to make the process easier—and provided help when needed on the phone. She had perfect timing, finishing up this sweet little flannel playmat a couple weeks before the holidays. When those two grandbabies came from several states away to visit for Christmas, they got to play on Grandma’s first quilt!

Alice did a great job, and I can’t wait to convince her to make her second quilt.

About the Author: Lisa Swenson Ruble

I made my first quilt when I graduated from college and realized that I needed a hobby to fill all those hours that used to be dedicated to homework! Eleven years later, I'm completely addicted to quilting and thrilled that my day job as the managing editor for Quilt, Simple Quilts & Sewing and Quilt Almanac allows me to "play" with quilts and the friendly world of quilters!

    Dear Lisa,

Thanks for your help, encouragement, and kind words! I’d like to add that another wonderful use for that quilt was snuggling under it with Thomas very early one morning. He actaully fell back to sleep!

    Love, Alice

I made my first quilt in the summer of 2008 and I still don’t consider myself to be a quilter.
It’s now 2010 and I’m getting ready to start my second quilt project using my new AccuQuilt GO! to cut out the strips and squares. Whoo-hoo! This tool is such a BIG help as my hands got so tired with rotary cutting on my first quilt.
Thanks for the cute story…I really enjoyed it and am inspired to continue my quilting quest!
