A Bit of a Gadget Girl

Yes, I must admit it, I love any new tool that makes quilting a little bit quicker and easier. Unfortunately, there are tons on the market, so which products are worth having and truly make quilting more enjoyable? I have several favorites that I have been using recently and love. All of these are rulers and I will show you some of the quilts that I have made.

The first one is a Hunter’s Star Quilt. I actually used two specialty rulers, the Petite Rapid Fire Hunter’s Star Ruler and the Tucker Trimmer. These two rulers made it super easy and quick to make these difficult blocks with a beautiful result.

Another one is the Lil’ Twister ruler. This made tessellating pinwheels a snap to make. No fussing! I made two versions a silk, seen in my previous blog post, and also a striped one that I named Peruvian Pinwheels and is now residing with my friend in Peru!

The 9 Degree Circle Wedge Ruler is also a fun one. I just made a quilt using this ruler and it was all strip pieced, but formed a dresden of sorts. Instead of completing a circle, I made a design decision and used quarter circles so that the quilting could take center stage.

Last but not least, I am making a quilt with a BRAND new ruler that hasn’t been released yet! It is going to be released a Spring Quilt Market. So I was asked by the designer to test the ruler and all I can say is… it is fantastic! It makes a very traditional block that is not that easy to make, easy!!

If you have any tools, techniques or ideas that make quilting quicker and easier, I would love to hear about it! Leave me a comment and share your insights.

I can’t wait to do a quilt with the big Lil’ Twister and if I ever do Dresden plates I”m getting the 9* ruler, too.
It’s lovely to have you preview all the new tools before investing in them myself.

I am crazy about Marti Michell templates.
while some think they are a pain to use and just make the same old patterns…..I love their accuracy and the freedom they give me to do my own thing.

    Happy Sewing

Hi Jackie I have to say that the best tools fro me that I have found recently are Thangles, I just love them..they make all your half sq. triangle units just perfect. And I cannot tell you which ones but I think rulers are the best peice of equipment you could have for any quilt. Especially if you have trouble with straight lines…lol Would love to have the twister set I just love the look of the blocks. Thanks so much for all you do for us quitlers and all the info you share.

My two favorite tools are pretty common. I can’t quilt without my 6 by 24 inch ruler. The one I have has several angle lines on it. It is useful for so many things.
The other tool is an eyebrow trimmer that I use as a “mistake eraser” (aka seam ripper)

I’m so old skool. I don’t use that many gadgets when I probably should! My favorite can’t live without it thing in my workspace is my design wall and digital camera. Without them I wouldn’t be able to design quilts.

I’d have to say my favorite ‘gadget’ is my frosted rulers. I love them!!! But are they a ‘gadget’ or a necessity?

OH! And I swear by my Martelli rotary cutter and blades. :) I guess that’s it. My ergonomic rotary cutter and those fantastic blades. :) Again, a necessity. ;)

Gadget … gadget … hmmm … my That Purple Thang! :) Stiletto, 1/4″ seam checker, corner turner, binding turner, … yup. That Purple Thang! :)

I’ve only been quilting for a while so I don’t have much of a collection of tools and gadgets (I’m sure that will change as I make more quilts) but right now my newest favourite tool is my ruler grip… one of those ones with the suction cups. It really does help to keep the ruler from slipping when cutting.

  • Meri says:

I have been quilting the “old fashioned” way (cutting each piece with scissors) for so long that moving up to a rotary cutter was a big deal! Now roaming around blogland and quilting sites has opened up access to so many new and wonderful gadgets that I am a little overwhelmed but I am also very keen to try them out. My current fav is my GO! but I am very interested in some new rulers and triangle gadgets!

Since I’m fairly new to quilting, I don’t have much beyond the basics. I love my 6×24″ ruler. I recently purchased some fluorescent colored tape (from Joann’s, I think) to mark the ruler when I was cutting out a lot of 4 5/8″ squares and it made it a lot quicker and easier to measure and cut them.

The circle wedge ruler quilt you made is breathtaking. I always like what I find on your blog.

I found some large, flat shallow plastic bins with locking lids at Office Depot this year. I think they are for scrapbooking or photo storage, but they are perfect for storing blocks and instructions for current projects.

My other tip is when I find a project I want to make from a magazine, I scan a colored copy to keep with the fabrics until I can get to it. That way the magazine isn’t missing or torn apart and I can remember what the fabrics were for.

It is proving invaluable for making half square triangles and flying geese – anything that needs to be sewn on the diagonal. With my arthritis I’m going to have to say my Accuquilt Go, but I still need help with turning the handle some days. Next would be the trio of Gypsy Quilting Grippers for the rulers that allow me to hold the in place pretty well.

The gadget I use the most is my 6 x 24 ruler. I don’t have any specialty rulers yet, as I’m new to quilting and just doing my first quilt. As I advance with quilting I’m hoping to aquire some specialty rulers.

I don’t have a ton of gadgets outside of rulers, cutting mats and cutters. One that I have found very useful from time to time is my Clover 1/4″ bias tape maker. It is so simple and works so well.

Glad to find that you blog here, too! I love the Angler 2 for sewing half-square triangles. What ruler do you recommend for making flying geese? I have a project coming up that has a gaggle of geese. A friend had this issue of Quilt magazine. I have to have it. I’m looking locally, but if I can’t find it I’ll order one from your site. Have a great weekend!

Favorite gadget is a wooden press tool my dad made for me. He used the wood from a tree that was cut down on our property. I have next to my machine and use it on small seams as I go and then use the regular iron later. It is something I will always treasure.

I really like my 1X12 ruler for cutting, my ott light and my stiletto. I love, love Quilt magazine and really need a subscription to it.
I am buying it off the newstand too much. The Kaffe Fassett column in the Quilt is one of my favorite. Thanks for the chance to win.

My new favorite toy is my Wave-Edge Ruler. I picked it up on a whim at a quilt show in January, and I finally got to play with it last week. What a neat tool!

Of course, without my rotary cutter, I’d be lost!

I’d love to try out the Twister ruler, too, I love pinwheels.

My favorite gadget is whatever the latest one I see or read about! I’m a gadget junkie and I love to try them all – from the practical (Curve Master Foot) to the unusual (Reynolds Freezer Paper). I love them all. Coffee stir sticks from McDonald’s anyone – the flat ones are perfect for even spacing for a ladder stitch…

I am very new to quilting and at this stage I have no special gadgets, just a sharp pair of fabric sissors, some fabric, a needle & some thread. There are so many tools available I really don’t know where to start. So for now I am keeping it simple.

The only specialty tool I own is the full-sized twister ruler. I am a beginning sewer and I LOVE how easy it was to create a complicated, lap-sized quilt with this tool. No one would guess that it’s my first quilt top. My sister recently bought the rapid-fire Hunter’s star tool and has been singing its praises.

I cannot live without my rotary cutter! The first few quilts I made using scissors to cut out the pieces and then when I really started getting into quilting I went out and bought the rulers, rotary cutter, & mat….SO MUCH EASIER. There are so many ‘gadgets’ it’s hard to choose just one! I also wouldn’t want to piece without my 1/4″ foot!
